Obtaining Backup Codes for MFA-Duo

How to obtain backup codes for MFA-Duo

Creating backup codes will greatly simplify your NetID MFA-Duo reactivation process should you need to add or replace a device.

To generate backup codes please visit https://mynetid.wisc.edu/mfa-portal?rm=codes. You will encounter the dialog box below after logging in and using Duo:

Create Backup Passcodes dialog box

Click on the Print Backup Passcodes link. The print dialog box will appear, allowing you to physically print the codes or print them to a PDF file. Whichever option you choose, be sure to save these codes in a secure location.

To use a passcode in place of a Duo push or Duo-generated code, click on the Other options link in the MFA-Duo login dialog box:

Select the Bypass code option:

Finally, enter one of your generated and unused passcodes into the Enter your bypass code box. Click on Verify and then you will be logged in for 12 hours:

Each set of generated codes is good for up to four months and may be used only once.
