Research Object Storage (S3) - Eligibility for no-cost subsidy

Any permanent UW-Madison staff member is eligible to receive a Research Object Storage (S3) account.  However, only specific groups are eligible for the no cost subsidy.  Anyone not eligible for the subsidy will be given a fully billed account and will pay for any storage used.

Criteria for automatic eligibility for Research Object Storage (S3) no cost subsidy:

Individuals in the following categories are automatically eligible for 50 TB of no cost storage on Research Object Storage (S3):

  • Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty (Faculty Job Group, Job Codes: FA040 (Assistant Professor); FA030 (Associate Professor); and FA020 (Professor))
  • Academic Staff who have been granted Permanent PI status
  • Academic Staff with Research Professor titles ((Research Job Group, Job Codes: RE112 (Research Assistant Professor), RE113 (Research Associate Professor), RE035 (Research Professor))

Eligibility Exceptions

At this time, we are not able to offer eligibility exceptions.  Only individuals in an automatically eligible title (listed above) may receive a subsidy.

IT Support accounts:

School, college, or departmental IT and other research support staff may request a support account for learning purposes at no cost.  Support accounts do not come with the 50TB no cost subsidy and are not intended for long term data storage (they are occasionally audited for this).

To request a support account, please complete the Research Object Storage (S3) request form
