How to Identify a Supported Computer

How to find identifying information for a UW-owned, TS-supported computer.

The Technical Support team can identify a computer by its name or its serial number (Apple) or service tag (Dell).

Hardware (Physical) Identification

Supported computers usually have a label saying they are supported by ITS Technical Support (formerly LSS TechZone). That label includes the name of the computer on the third line (outlined in the images below).

The location of the label varies by device:

  • For all laptops, it is generally on the bottom of the device.
  • For Dell desktops, it is usually on the top or side near the power button.
  • For Apple desktops (iMacs and Mac minis), it is usually on the back of device.

Software Identification

macOS

  1. Click on the apple icon in the top left of the screen and select About This Mac.
  2. Look for the Serial number in the window that appears.

Windows

Using Dell Command | Update

  1. Open Dell Command | Update by searching for it in the Start menu.
  2. Look for the Service Tag on the left side of the window.

Using Command Prompt

If you do not have Dell Command | Update:

  1. Open Command Prompt by searching for it in the Start menu.
  2. Type the following command, then hit Enter:
    wmic bios get serialnumber
