When you are adding a new user or viewing your list of existing users, you will see the KB's user permissions as a series of checkboxes. For example, here are the checkboxes on the "Add a User" screen:
Please note that some groups may also have an "Assessment" permission, though this is uncommon.
Each of these permissions is explained in detail below:
Active
This is the baseline user permission. If this box is not checked, the user will not have any group-specific access, regardless of what other permissions are checked. They will still be able to access external (public) content, as well as any campus access content your group may have published.
Please note that removing the "Active" permission is primarily intended for cases where you need to quickly and/or temporarily remove access. To remove access long-term, you should follow the full process to remove the user as described in KB User's Guide - Users Tab - Viewing, Updating and Deleting Users.
Internal KB / iKB
This checkbox grants the user access to your group's internal KB site, which is also referred to as being a fully authorized user. If "Active" and "iKB" are the only two permissions checked, the user will not have access the KB Admin Tools for your group.
Owner Docs / oDocs
This checkbox makes the user an author and grants them access to the Documents tab in the KB Admin Tools. However, beyond creating new documents, they will only be able to edit documents that they personally own within your group. This permission is superseded by the "Group Docs" permission described below.
Group Docs / gDocs
This checkbox makes the user an author and grants them access to the Documents tab in the KB Admin Tools. They will be able to create new documents and edit any documents owned by your group, excluding docs with custom write access restrictions they are not authorized for. This permission, in combination with the three permissions above, is sometimes to referred to as "basic author permissions".
News
This checkbox grants access to the News tab. Users with this permission can create, edit, and activate news items for the group. See [Link for topic 528 is unavailable at this time.] for more a list of documents related to the News tab.
Topics
This checkbox grants access to the Topics tab. Users with this permission can create and manage the group's topic tree and audiences. See [Link for topic 530 is unavailable at this time.] for documents related to topics and audiences.
Settings
This checkbox grants access to the Settings tab. Users with this permission can manage group relationships, group contact information, site menus and layout, and notifications. See [Link for topic 531 is unavailable at this time.] for a list of documents covering actions under the Settings tab.
Users
This checkbox grants access to the Users tab. Users with this permission can add and manage other users with access to your group space, including their own permissions. See [Link for topic 532 is unavailable at this time.] for more information on user management.
Assessment (certain groups only)
This checkbox grants access to the Assessment tab if it is enabled for your group. Most groups do not have the Assessments tab or associated permission checkbox. Users with this permission can create and manage assessments for your group space. See [Link for topic 4290 is unavailable at this time.] for documents related to assessments.
Stats
This checkbox grants access to the Stats tab. Users with this permission can view a variety of stats and logs for your group space, such as document views, doc helpfulness scores, your sites' search log, and document events. See [Link for topic 534 is unavailable at this time.] for documents describing KB stats.
Publish
This checkbox gives the user the ability to publish, or activate, documents under the Documents tab. Publish rights, or lack thereof, determines the workflow the user will follow when editing documents. Publish permissions are also required to access the batch tools under the Documents tab.
Tester
This checkbox makes the user a beta tester in your group space. On rare occasions, new features may be released to beta testers before they are more broadly released to all users. Users who wish to opt in for early access to beta features should check this box.
