Customize Views / Columns (View Builder)

This doc explains how to customize your views and columns in the Reader section of Slate. At the end of this document are also some example custom views you could create for your own use.

How to Create a Custom View

To get started, navigate to the Reader in Slate (laptop icon in top menu), and then select the Search tab in the left hand panel, which will likely reveal a list of your applicants. Then follow the steps below (or watch the webinar video linked above).

Step 1: Copy the View Builder to Create a New View

  1. Select the filter icon to change your view to View Builder (see screenshot below).

  2. Select the filter icon again, and then select Customize View (see screenshot below).

  3. In the Customize View window that opens, select the small Copy Icon in the top right hand corner (see screenshot below).

  4. Provide a *descriptive name* for the new view and select the OK button.

*Changing the name of this custom view later is kind of annoying, so consider these tips:

  • Views will be listed in alphabetical order, so if you want certain views grouped together, name them similarly. If you want all of your views at the top of your list, for example, consider adding an asterisk * at the beginning.
  • Differentiate this view from others from your default views somehow, such as adding "Custom View" to the name.
  • Consider adding the purpose of this view to the name, to remind you of the columns chosen.
  • If you anticipate creating a view that will filter to a specific term, include that term in the name (e.g., Fall 2025). This will also remind you to update your view each term/year.
  • If you anticipate creating a view that will filter to a specific program or programs, include the program in the name.

Step 2: Select Your Exports/Columns

  1. In the Customize View window, review the list of Exports, which are the available columns of data you can populate in the view.

    All of the exports listed in lighter gray are inactive, meaning they are currently not being displayed in the view.

    The exports NameUG Institution, Verified Eng Prof Type, Plan, and Completed View are activated by default (but you can inactivate these columns following the directions below).

  2. To activate or inactivate the exports you want, select the Pencil Icon for the specific export (see screenshot below):

  3. Change the status to Active to have this column appear; change the status to Inactive to hide this column, then select save

  4. To change the order of the columns, click-and-drag the exports into your desired order. The Exports are listed in left-to-right order (e.g., the first listed export at the top is the furthest left column, and the last listed export is the further right column).


Do NOT click Update yet. Move onto Step 3.

Step 3: Filter Programs (optional)

  1. Scroll down in the Customize View window to review your Filters. By default, this copied view you are creating will bring in all of the programs that you have access to. So, for example, if you are the Graduate Coordinator for two programs (Herbology MS and Herbology PHD), this view would list both of those programs by default.

  2. To filter and include only certain programs, select the Filter icon.

  3. In the search bar at the top, type in GS Plan Subplan. Select the GS Plan Subplan filter (it will turn dark blue). Then click Continue button (see screenshot below)

  4. In the Edit Part window that opens, select the Plan/Subplans you wish to include in this view. Use the Ctrl key to select multiple programs. You can use the small Search bar to the left of the list to find your desired programs. Please note that even though subplans you do not administer exist in this list, selecting them will not bring those applications into your view because of your population permissions. Still, to make sure your view loads faster, only select the programs you want in this view.

  5. Click Save


Do NOT click Update yet. Move onto Step 4.

Step 4: Filter Terms (optional)

  1. To filter and include only certain terms, select the Filter button icon.

  2. In the search bar at the top, type in GS Term. Select the GS Term filter (it will turn dark blue). Then click Continue.

  3. In the Edit Part window that opens, select the Terms you wish to include in this view. Use the Ctrl key to select multiple programs. You can use the small Search bar to the left of the list to find your desired programs.

  4. Select Save


Do NOT click Update yet. Move onto Step 5.

Step 5: Filter Domestic or International Applicants (optional)

  1. To filter Domestic or International Students, select the Filter button icon.

  2. In the search bar at the top, type in GS Domestic or International. Select the GS Domestic or International filter (it will turn dark blue). Select Continue.

  3. In the Edit Part window that opens, select whether wish to include Domestic applicants or International applicants in this view. (If you wish to include both, there is no need to set up this filter.)

  4. Select Save


Do NOT click Update yet. Move onto Step 6.

Step 6: Save and Pin Your View for Future Use

  1. Once you have set your Exports/Columns and Filters, select the Checkmark icon near the top of the Customize View window, next to your new view’s name; this will save your view's settings.

  2. Select the Pin icon, which will add this view to your lists of views in the reader.

  3. Select Update. This view is now available to you to use in the Reader, including your own Queue, Classify, and in each of the Bins.

Editing a Custom View

Edit the Columns of a Custom View

  1. Select the filter icon and then select the name of the custom view you wish to rename
  2. Select the filter icon again, and then select Customize View
  3. Make edits to the exports and/or filters for the view (following directions in Steps 2-5 of "How to Create a Custom View" above)
  4. Select the Save Icon (looks like a check mark)
  5. Select Update. Your view is now updated.

Please note that shared views (such as "Default - See All") cannot be deleted nor edited.

Changing the Custom View Name

Unfortunately, there is no way to quickly edit the name. Instead, you have to make a copy of the view you wish to rename, and give the copy the name you want following the steps below.

  1. Select the filter icon and then select the name of the custom view you wish to rename
  2. Select the filter icon again, and then select Customize View
  3. In the Customize View window that opens, select the small Copy Icon in the top right hand corner.
  4. Provide a new name for the view and select the OK button
  5. Select the Save Icon (looks like a check mark)
  6. Select the Pin icon, which will add this newly named view to your lists of views in the reader.
  7. Select Update. With your newly named view ready, you may want to delete the view with the old name.

Please note that shared views (such as "Default - See All") cannot be renamed.

Delete a Custom View

  1. Select the filter icon and then select the name of the custom view you wish to delete
  2. Select the filter icon again, and then select Customize View
  3. In the Customize View window that opens, select the small delete "X" icon (see screenshot below).
  4. A pop up will ask if you are sure you wish to delete this view; select OK (see screenshot below). That custom view is now deleted.

Please note that shared views (such as "Default - See All") cannot be deleted.

Example Views You Can Make

English Proficiency View

Activate the following exports:

  • Name - applicant's name
  • Citizenship Country - applicant's reported country of citizenship
  • Mailing Address Country - applicant's reported mailing address country (which may give you a clue if the student currently resides in or out of the United States)
  • UG Institution - applicant's reported undergraduate institution (which may give you a clue if the student went to an English language institution); please note, if the student attended multiple undergrad institutions, only one will show up here
  • Verified Eng Prof Type - any official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo tests that have been received by the Graduate School
  • Verified Eng Prof Score - score from the official English test
  • Verified Eng Prof Date - date the score was received by the Graduate School
  • Plan - name of the intended plan/subplan of the applicant
  • Term - application entry term
  • Latest Comment - the latest comment placed on this application

Add the following filters

  • GS Domestic or International - filter only for International students so you are not looking at domestic applicants when reviewing your applicant list fo for English proficiency score

Faculty & Area of Interest View

Activate the following exports:

  • Name - applicant's name
  • Campus ID - applicant's campus ID
  • Domestic or Intl - whether the applicant is an international or domestic applicant
  • UG Institution - applicant's reported undergraduate institution (which may give you a clue if the student went to an English language institution); please note, if the student attended multiple undergrad institutions, only one will show up here
  • Plan - name of the intended plan/subplan of the applicant
  • Term - application entry term
  • Supp App Fac Choice 1 - returns first faculty choice by applicant (only works if your Faculty Choice question is a drop down in supp app)
  • Supp App Fac Choice 2 - returns second faculty choice
  • Supp App Fac Choice 3 - returns third faculty choice
  • Supp App AOI Choice 1 - returns first area of interest (AOI) selected by applicant (only works if your area of interest question is a drop down in supp app)
  • Supp App AOI Choice 2 - returns second area of interest
  • Supp App AOI Choice 3 - returns third area of interest
  • Latest Comment - the latest comment placed on this application

Add the following filters

  • None, unless you want to filter out certain terms

Unsubmitted Application Progress View

Activate the following exports:

  • Name - applicant's name
  • Created Date - the date the application was first started by the applicant
  • Domestic or Intl - whether the applicant is an international or domestic applicant
  • Plan - name of the intended plan/subplan of the applicant
  • Term - application entry term
  • Unofficial Eng Prof Type - unofficial TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo test that's been self-reported in the application
  • Unofficial Eng Prof Score - the self-reported score on the English proficieny test
  • References - provides the number of references received over the number of references required
  • Supp App Complete? - whether the applicant has finished the required fields of your program's supp app
  • Has CV/Resume? - whether a CV/Resume document has been uploaded into the application
  • Has Statement? - whether a statement document has been uploaded into the application
  • Schools Entered? - whether previously attended institutions have been provided in the app
  • Latest Comment - the latest comment placed on this application

Add the following filters

  • None, unless you want to filter out certain terms
