Staff Professional Development Funding
The Department of Chemistry supports and encourages the ongoing learning, growth, and development of staff. To help facilitate professional development, the department allocates a modest budget to support job-related learning activities such as classes, conferences, memberships, and related travel. Staff are also encouraged to help extend these resources by utilizing free campus-supported classes or leveraging the department funds for matching grants.
General Guidelines:
- Before requesting departmental funding for a professional development activity, staff must apply for L&S and/or UW-Madison grants.
- Generally speaking, the department will provide matching funds for staff who are awarded campus or L&S grants and scholarships.
- Staff can apply for departmental funding assistance for one professional development activity per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
- Professional development activities must be related to one's current position and/or responsibilities in the department.
- Applications will be reviewed by department administration and approved based on adherence to guidelines and available funding.
- When the fiscal year budget is depleted, all requests will require Leadership Council approval.
- Individual requests exceeding $2000 require additional approval from the Leadership Council.
- Eligible staff include those in renewable, department-funded positions equal/greater than 50% FTE.
Funding Request Procedures:
- Discuss the professional development opportunity with your supervisor.
- Apply for an external professional development grant 4-6 months before the opportunity begins. Available grants include:
- Academic Staff Professional Development Grants
- L&S University Staff Professional Development Grants
- UW-Madison University Staff Tuition Reimbursement (typically for coursework done outside of work time)
- If a grant is not awarded, or if the grant is awarded but does not cover the entire cost of the request, complete a Department of Chemistry Professional Development Funding Application Form.
- You will be contacted regarding the status of your request and instructions for payment/reimbursement, if approved.
