CHM Policies and Procedures - Faculty Affiliation Policies and Procedures

Currently adopted CHM Faculty Affiliation Policies and Procedures as of January 31, 2025.

Types of Faculty Affiliations:

  1. Affiliated Faculty

    1. Description: This level of affiliation is intended to support building or deepening connection and interdisciplinary collaborations in areas of interest that align with CHM’s mission and strategic priorities.

    2. Criteria for consideration:

      1. Commitment to interdisciplinary science or scholarship

      2. Alignment with CHM’s:

        1. Mission to promote well-being and reduce suffering through a scientific understanding of the mind

        2. Vision for a kinder, wiser, more compassionate world

        3. Priority research directions

        4. Interest in human flourishing, applying well-being practices and understanding what works for whom

    3. Term: 3 years, renewable

    4. Benefits: 

      1. Invitation to all Center meetings of interest such as CHM Faculty and Community Meetings, Annual Offsite, social gatherings

      2. Public recognition of affiliation on CHM website

      3. Support to submit grant proposals through CHM. Includes Research Administrator and Research Support Core consultation

      4. Eligibility to apply for seed funding through the annual Center Director Fund grant opportunity

    5. Expectations: 

      1. Provide service to CHM in at least one of the following items each year

        1. May serve on ad hoc committees such as, review funding proposals, to mentor or review CHM Research Professors or to serve on faculty search committees

        2. May co-mentor graduate or postdoctoral trainees with CHM appointments

        3. Host an external speaker as part of CHM speaker series

        4. Play significant role in a CHM initiative and/or CHM research

      2. Embody and support Center core values

  2. Core Faculty

    1. Description: Includes faculty funded by CHM endowments and other faculty deemed sufficiently engaged in the initiatives, activities and furthering the work of CHM.

    2. Criteria for non-endowed faculty, in addition to criteria for affiliated faculty, and as appropriate to their discipline:

      1. An expectation of, or demonstrated track record of grants administered by CHM

      2. An expectation of, or demonstrated track record of publication with other CHM faculty and investigators

      3. An expectation of, or demonstrated history of significant engagement with CHM initiatives

      4. Scholarship or research interests having a high-degree of alignment with CHM strategic priorities

    3. Term: Indefinite for endowed faculty; 3 year renewable for non-endowed faculty

    4. Benefits (In addition to those granted to affiliated faculty):

      1. Communications and marketing support to promote human subject recruitment

      2. HR support for staff employed by the Center, requires funding administered by the Center

      3. Eligibility for start-up or other financial support (if available and as negotiated by the Center Director)

      4. Desk space

    5. Expectations (in addition to those granted to affiliated faculty):

  1. Attend all faculty meetings

  2. Determine CHM strategic direction, future faculty hiring and affiliation

  3. Mentor or co-mentor graduate or postdoctoral trainees or Research Professors with CHM appointments

  4. Annually vote for Center Director

Procedure:

  • Initial candidates to provide a CV, may be asked to give a presentation and/or meet with existing CHM Faculty

  • Majority of Center Core faculty to vote on proposals for and review of affiliation in addition to type of affiliation

  • Quorum: Two thirds of Core faculty

  • Voting may be conducted in-person or electronically

  • (C) HR support for staff employed by the Center, requires funding administered by the Center

  • (C) Eligibility for other Center financial support, such as start-up funding

  • (C) Desk space (limited)

  • (A optional, C) Attend faculty meetings

  • (A, C) Serve on ad hoc committees (including but not limited to): 

    • faculty searches or faculty review committees (as negotiated with hiring or tenure home departments)

    • Review of Center Director Fund proposals

    • Mentor and review Research Professors within CHM

  • (A, C) Host external speakers as part of CHM speaker series

  • (A, C) Embody and support Center values:

    • Conducting our work with rigor

    • Making an impact on the world

    • Cultivating a prosocial workplace

  • (C) Determine CHM strategic scientific direction

  • (C) Mentor or co-mentor graduate or postdoctoral trainees or Research Professors with CHM appointments

  • (C) Vote on faculty affiliations
