Access the VNC server from your MacOS computer

How to remotely connect to spectrometer computer VNC through your MacOS computer

Access the VNC server from your MacOS computer

On your Mac OS-X computer we will use TigerVNC to connect to the VNC server running on the spectrometer computer.

If you don’t have it already, download and install TigerVNC:

  • Navigate to: http://tigervnc.bphinz.com/nightly/
  • Scroll down to the Mac OS-X section and download latest version of TigerVNC
  • Install TigerVNC on your Mac OS-X computer

Open a terminal window: Launchpad > Other > Terminal

In the terminal window:

  • Navigate to the Mac OS-X subfolder of TigerVNC:

cd /Applications/TigerVNC\ Viewer\ 1.XX.XX.app/Contents/MacOS

  • Replace 1.XX.XX.app with the installed version of TigerVNC (e.g. 1.10.80.app)
  • Start the program “TigerVNC Viewer” with the ‘-via’ option to tunnel through gw1 (or gw2):

./TigerVNC\ Viewer -via NetID@gw1.nmrfam.wisc.edu fleckvieh.nmrfam.wisc.edu:1

  • Replace NetID with your NetID username
  • Enter the NMRFAM spectrometer computer and VNC session number started in step 1 above (e.g. fleckvieh.nmrfam.wisc.edu:1)
  • If the terminal does not immediately prompt you for a password, click the TigerVNC Viewer app logo in your toolbar. This should cause the terminal to ask for your password.
  • You will be prompted (in the terminal) to enter your NetID password
  • The next password requested (in a pop-up window) is the VNC password (provided by a staff member)
  • A new window will appear with the desktop from the spectrometer computer.

NOTE: expanding this window to full screen is sometimes required to ensure that the position of the mouse pointer matches the screen coordinates clicked.
