Genetics: Colloquium, editing and uploading videos
We have our weekly colloquium, which is recorded via Zoom, and then are edited to remove any blank time before or after the presentation, and then uploaded to our YouTube channel. To do this, you'll need access to the LastPass Vault that contains the YouTube credentials, so you'll first need to activate LastPass via the admin console for Webmail:
Once you've got 1Password enabled and I've shared the passwords with you, here's what needs to be done next:
- Log into uwmadison.zoom.us with your NetID and password. You've already been added to the shared Zoom account, so you'll see that option - pick that:
- Go to Recordings & Transcripts on the left and you'll see a list of recordings. Pick the newest one and download the files:
- That downloads a video as well as an audio-only track, you just need the video. You can use the program ClipChamp, which should be installed on any of the PCs, to trim the video - import the video and use the timeline function to find where the presentation starts and ends, and drag the handles to trim the video. Trim the video to remove leading and trailing dead space so that it's just the actual presentation. If you have an alternate tool you'd like to use to edit the video, feel free, ClipChamp is just fairly simple and free:
- Once you've trimmed the video, click Export at the top right, and if it asks about removing gaps, click Fix and select Remove:
- Export the video at 1080p and give it the name and date of the presenter.
- It'll take a while to process. Once it's done, check the video to make sure it looks good. go to YouTube and log in with the Genetics YouTube credentials in 1Password. If you're already signed in, you might want to do this step in Incognito mode:
- In YouTube, click the Create button at top and select Upload. Drag and drop the processed video file into the window to upload it. Fill in the title in this format:
UW-Madison Genetics Colloquium - SPEAKER NAME | DATE, 2024
Add a description from the colloquium announcement - I got this information from Martha's email: - Put the video in the appropriate playlists. You can leave the rest of the options as defaults:
- Click Next until you get to the Visibility section and set the video to Public, and then click Publish:
