Globus: Accessing a Shared Folder by Invitation

Instructions for accessing shared folders within a Globus collection.

    Requirements

    In this document, we are assuming the following:

    • You have been invited to access a Globus shared folder.
    • You do not already have a Globus account.
    • Your organization does not affiliate its logins with Globus.

    Instructions

    To access data that has been shared with you via Globus, please follow the steps below:

    • Open Invitation Email

       
      • Check your email inbox for a message from Globus Notification (typically sent from no-reply@globus.org) with a subject line mentioning the shared folder name, the person who shared it, and your email address.
        Click on the link under the Use this URL to access the folder:
        Notification Email- click on the link.


    • Globus Account Creation

      • There are multiple ways to log in to Globus. For this document, we assume your organization does not have Globus affiliation and you do not already have a Globus account and will be creating a Globus ID.
        Click on the link Globus ID to sign in, next to Didn't find your organization? to start the Globus ID creation process.

      • Click on the link titled Need a Globus ID? Sign Up.

      • Create a Globus ID by choosing a unique username, filling out all the requested fields, and agree to the terms of service and privacy policy.
        NOTE: Make sure you enter the E-mail address where you received the invitation E-mail in the "E-Mail" field of the ID creation page.  This will be necessary for you link your Globus ID to the shared folder.
        Click the Create ID button.

      • On the Verify E-mail Address screen, you will see that an email was sent to the email address you provided when you created your Globus ID.

      • Go to your email inbox and copy the verification code from the email message sent by Globus ID Verification.
        Copy the verification code from the email message


      • Paste the code into the Verification Code field and click on the Verify button.

      • Click the Continue button since you do not have an existing Globus account.
        Click on Continue button


      • Click on the Continue button to complete the Globus account sign-up process.
        Complete the sign-up process by clicking the Continue button


      • Accept the terms of service by clicking the Allow button.

      • You will be taken to the File Manager tab of the Globus Web App.
        IMPORTANT: There should be a yellow box stating that you were invited to access this collection as [your email address], which is not linked to your Globus account.

      • Click the Continue button.
        Confirm linking of email addresss to your Globus account


      • Go to your email inbox and copy the email ownership confirmation code that was just sent by verify@auth.globus.org

      • Paste the confirmation code and click the Submit button.

      • Within the File Manager tab of the Globus Web App, navigate to the folder which was shared with you, if you are not already in the path.

    You should now be able to access the shared folder within the collection which you were invited to share.
