Tuition Remission

  • Tuition Remission is a benefit to graduate and professional students holding a Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Program/Project Assistant or Lecturer Student Assistant appointment to help alleviate the cost of tuition.
  • Tuition Remission and Tuition Waiver are used interchangeably but mean the same.
  • The tuition remission does not cover fees.
    • Students are responsible for paying their segregated fees and any other fees such as the Official Document Fee, the International Student Fee and Late Initial Enrollment Fee not covered by the tuition remission.
    • If any portion of the students’ tuition and fees are not covered by the remission, the student must pay the remaining balance before the tuition due date to avoid a late payment fee.
    • Some fees may be paid for by the department by completing an Internal Third Party Form
  • There is a tuition remission surcharge for PA and RA appointments. The surcharge will be charged automatically to the same funding the salary/stipend is paid on. Review the FY26 Changes for more information on current rates and processing. There is no surcharge for TA and LSA appointments.

To qualify - RA/TA/PA/LSA

  • A grad student must have a 33% FTE or higher RA/TA/PA/LSA appointment entered into Workday by the 6th Friday after classes start each semester.
    • The cutoff date is October 10 for fall semester 2025 (FY26).
    • No appointments entered after the cutoff date will be considered for tuition remission eligibility.
  • Review the FY26 Changes for more detailed information.

Tuition Remission Process

  1. The department completes the Tuition Remission Form (also known as the Tuition Remission Authorization form). This form lists students who meet the eligibility requirements, and it tells the Bursar’s Office how to apply tuition charges to the student’s account.
  2. The Bursar’s Office will review the file and apply the specific type of tuition remission to the student’s tuition account.
  3. Tuition Remission does not cover fees. Some fees may be paid for by the department; the department would complete an Internal Third Party Payment form.
