MD Program Policy: Residents as Teachers

Residents are critical contributors to UW SMPH medical student clinical learning. This policy codifies the requirement that residents who teach or supervise medical students receive appropriate training.

Policy Details

  1. In order to be adequately prepared, all residents who teach or supervise UW SMPH medical students must be familiar with the following:
    • Overall medical student program objectives (SMPH Graduation Competencies),
    • Key policies related to working with and supervising students,
    • The particular goals and learning objectives of the course, block, or clerkship in which they are teaching medical students.

  2. Resident familiarity with objectives, policies, and goals is accomplished through required viewing of online modules developed by UW SMPH.

  3. The resident-sponsoring institution will maintain a database confirming resident participation in these requirements, and UW SMPH will receive yearly report.
