GAEW Training Canvas Course [non-credit]

This KB outlines the steps for graduate students to take to successfully complete Part 1 of the GAEW Training and have their score recorded in Canvas. This is a self-guided training that can take (on average) 90 minutes to review and interact with the content.

The Graduate Assistants’ Equity Workshops, (GAEWs), are employee professional development sessions offered each academic year for Teaching Assistants (TAs), Program/Project Assistants (PAs) and Research Assistants (RAs). GAEWs have two components: one live, virtual workshop offered seventeen times each academic year and a companion asynchronous course offered via Canvas. TAs cannot be reappointed for more than one semester unless they have completed both GAEW components. TAs, PAs, and RAs are required to complete the GAEWs only once as a UW-Madison Graduate Assistant. The workshops provide participants with information regarding rights, responsibilities, workplace expectations, and resources; promote belonging, excellence, and inclusion; and foster student and employee success.

Participants receive information about relevant laws, policies, regulations, resources, and best practices; explore the practical application of these policies to teaching, learning, and research environments; and engage in conversations designed to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and excellence. The sessions encourage the development of competencies that sustain and strengthen UW–Madison’s position of preeminence in research and higher education and advance critical campus strategic priorities.

Note: this KB only addresses the Canvas training, and does not address the live, virtual workshops (Part 2) that are also required as part of the eligibility requirements for graduate students’ positions.
