[How-To] Using CALS IT Jump Servers

Step-by-step instructions for internal IT staff to access Tier 0, 1, and 2 CALS IT Jump Servers via RDP from Windows and macOS.

CALS IT provides jump servers for Active Directory administration (Tiers 0, 1, and 2). These systems include RSAT and the CALS ADTools PowerShell module.

Prerequisites

  • Network: You must be on a wired CALS subnet or connected to the UW-Madison VPN.
  • Tier 0 Access: Accessing the T0 jump server requires a specific static VPN or wired IP.
  • Internet: Note that outbound internet access is disabled on all jump servers for security.

1. Identify Connection Address

2. Connect to the Server

From Windows

  1. Connect to the UW-Madison VPN if not on a wired CALS subnet.
  2. Open the Start Menu and type "Remote Desktop Connection".

  3. Enter the Connection Address from the table above.

  4. Enter your tier-specific credentials when prompted.
  5. Click Connect.

From macOS

  1. Install the Windows App from the App Store.

  2. Launch the app, click the + (Add) button, and select Add PC.

  3. Input the Connection Address and click Add.

  4. Double-click the new PC entry.
  5. Enter your tier-specific credentials and click Continue.
