Platform X: Connecting to Azure SQL Database via Azure Data Studio

This article guides users through setting up a connection to an Azure SQL Database via Azure Data Studio.

To connect to Azure SQL Database on a Platform X lab bench follow the below steps.

  1. Identify the SQL Database you would like to connect to. Typically the databases are named "sql-<project>-prod.database.windows.net". Not all lab benches have SQL Servers, so if you do not find an SQL Database by searching in the Azure Portal please submit a ticket via the portal to check if you have one.
  2. Log into your Platform X virtual machine.
  3. Search and open Azure Data Studio.
  4. Select "Create a connection"
  5. Create a connection
  6. Select the drop down next to the Account field to Add an account.
  7. Add an account
  8. A window will open. Complete signing into Azure using your Azure Portal login (<NetID>@platformx.wisc.edu).
  9. Search for the name of the SQL Server you identified in Step 1 in the Browse Connection field.
  10. Browse connections
  11. Select "Connect" at the bottom. A sample of a successful connection is below.
  12. Sample connection
