S3: Connecting to Research Object Storage using Cyberduck
A guide on how to use Cyberduck to connect to S3 buckets.
Prerequisites: You will need both a Research Object Storage (S3) account as well as credentials created for your S3 account. If you don't have one or both of those, please contact helpdesk@cals.wisc.edu and CALS IT staff will create those for you. Principal Investigators can request 50TB of S3 storage at no cost, and additional storage can be purchased for $60/TB/year. For more details, see this page.
Additionally, you will either need to be on a campus network or be connected to the VPN. If you don't have the VPN installed or configured, please follow this link to set that up.
Connecting to Research Object Storage (S3) using Cyberduck:
Cyberduck is a data connection program that can browse S3 buckets in the same manner as an FTP client. To connect to a campus S3 bucket using Cyberduck:
- Download and install Cyberduck from their site: https://cyberduck.io/download/
- Open Cyberduck and click Open Connection
- Select Amazon S3 under the type
- For Server, use campus.s3.wisc.edu
- Enter your Access Key and Secret in the blanks
- Click Connect

- Once you've connected, you'll see your default bucket. I'd recommend putting all your data in that bucket and not creating new top-level buckets.

- You can bookmark your bucket so you don't have to enter the access key and secret each time by clicking the Bookmark menu and selecting New Bookmark. Give it a descriptive name, and then just close the dialog box - it saves as you type, there's no 'OK' button:
