Troubleshooting InfoLab Circulation Dell Laptops - Asking for a Password

This document will go through how to fix the issue of an InfoLab Dell circulation laptop asking to change the password despite not having one.

Why does this happen?

This issue occurs due to a change as a part of a windows update that made security changes. While a more stable fix is being implemented, below is a simple workaround to this issue.

  1. Identify the issue. A blue screen with a request to enter or change a password will appear.

  2. Click into the first textbox.

  3. Do not type anything!

  4. Click the “Enter” key on the keyboard.

  5. This should bypass the need for a password or password change.

What to do if the above workaround does not work?

Sadly this means the laptop will need to be reset by InfoLabs staff. Please follow the steps below to checkout a different laptop.

  1. Return to the InfoLab the laptop belongs to.

  2. Let the staff know what the issue is.

  3. Ask to return the laptop and check out a new one.

If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by an InfoLab and ask or email ltghelpdesk@library.wisc.edu for further support.
