CAE Duo: Generating and Using a CAE Duo Bypass/Temporary Code
How to generate and use a Duo bypass or temporary code to log into CAE services
If you haven't set up Duo for your CAE account, or it was set up but hasn't been used, you should be able to use the following directions to create a bypass code to allow you to log into CAE resources.
1. Creating a Bypass Code
To get a Bypass/Temporary Duo code for your CAE account, you will need to Duo authorize with your NetID. If you don't have access to your NetID Duo account either, you will need to get a temporary code for that as well. To do so, please see here: https://kb.wisc.edu/87569
Please note: The Bypass/Temporary CAE specific Duo code that is generated can be used as many times as needed until expiration. Please ensure you safe guard the code as you would your regular duo device(s). You may also want to note the expiration date and time.
- Navigate to https://mfarecovery.cae.wisc.edu/
- Log in with your NetID and Password.
- You will now be prompted to Duo authorize for your NetID. If you need a Bypass/Temporary code for your NetID, please see DoIT's documentation here: https://kb.wisc.edu/87569
- Duo may ask you if the device you're using is your own. Select the option that applies. Note that this may not show up if you selected "Yes" before.
- Once you've Duo authorized, you'll be taken to the page seen below. Please fill out all 3 fields and click "Request a Temporary Code"
- If successful, on the next page there should now be a green box at the top of the screen, containing a 9-digit Bypass/Temporary code as well as the day & time that the code expires
2. Using the Bypass Code
- If the CAE Duo prompt is already requesting a Bypass code, enter the code that was just generated and click "Verify":

- If the CAE Duo prompt is attempting to send your mobile device a push, or it’s requesting a code from your MFA Token/Fob, click “Other options”

Then select "Bypass Code"
Enter the code you generated and click "Verify"
