Tableau: Configure Badger Data Warehouse (Snowflake)
This article outlines the complete steps to connect Tableau Desktop to Badger Data Warehouse (Snowflake), configure your Tableau Server OAuth credentials, and publish your workbooks.
Prerequisite: Configuring an ODBC Connection
- Windows users: Ensure you have already followed the steps in the Configuring an ODBC Connection (Windows) guide.
- Mac users: Please contact DoIT for assistance with ODBC driver setup.
Step 1: Adding Credential to Tableau Server
To publish a workbook connected to the Badger Data Warehouse (Snowflake) to Tableau Server, you must first embed your credentials on the server.
- Log in to https://tableau.wisconsin.edu/.
- Click your initials (located in the upper-right corner) and select My Account Settings.

- Navigate to: Saved Credentials for Data Sources > click Add (next to Snowflake).

- In the Add a New Saved Credential pop-up window, set Authentication to OAuth Credential and click Add.

- Enter the authentication details and click Add.
- Server: laa66896.us-east-1.snowflakecomputing.com.
- Role: <leave blank>

- In the Sign in to Snowflake pop-up window, click Log in using ADFSSingleSignOn.

- Click Allow.

Step 2: Connecting to Tableau Desktop
Tableau includes a native Snowflake connector to easily link Tableau Desktop to your Snowflake data.
- Open Tableau Desktop, click Data > New Data Source.

- Under the Connect sidebar, go to To a Server and click More... to search for Snowflake.

- Enter the authentication details and click Sign In.

- In the Sign in to Snowflake pop-up window, click Log in using ADFSSingleSignOn.

- Click Allow.

- It's safe to close your browser once you see the following message:

- Select appropriate Warehouse, Database, Schema.

Step 3: Publishing a Tableau Workbook
Specific publishing configurations are required to ensure a successful publication to Tableau Server.
- In Tableau Desktop, click Server > Publish Workbook.

- Under Data Sources, click Edit.

- Under Authentication for the Badger Data Warehouse (Snowflake) connection, select Embed <YourNetID>@wisc.edu.

- Click outside of the Manage Data Sources window and click Publish.
- If you encounter the error below when publishing, please complete Step 1 of this article to update your embedded credentials on Tableau Server before trying again.
