Special Considerations and Procedures

Creation of audio or video recordings or photographs: Choose this option if your research includes audio recordings, video recordings, or photographs.
If the research includes video recordings or photographs that will be included in presentations or publications, ensure that a Photo Release is included for participants to sign.

Collection and/or use of biological specimens for research purposes: The ED/SBS IRB can only review collection of biological specimens through non-invasive measures or one venapuncture.  If your research includes additional measures, please submit to the HS IRBs.

Deception: If your research project includes deception, be sure to include a debriefing statement to be provided to participants at the conclusion of their participation.

Interviews, focus groups, surveys, questionnaires, assessments:

  • Interviews & Focus Groups: Be sure to provide the finalized script or questions to be used.  For conversational or unstructured interviews or focus groups, a list of topics to be discussed must be provided at minimum.

  • Surveys, Questionnaires, Tasks & Assessments: Provide the finalized instrument(s) in the format in which it will be presented to participants.

International Research: Choose this option if your will be conducting research activities in or enroll participants from a location outside the United States.

Research activities occurring in an educational setting: Choose this option for research projects that are planned to take place in classroom(s) or other educational settings.

Secondary use of information (record/data/images): Choose this option if your research includes review(s) of databases, registries, records, or any other data that is collected primarily for non-research purposes.

Watching or listening to materials that subjects might consider offensive, threatening, or degrading (e.g., pictures, videos): For research projects including materials that may be considered offensive, threatening, or degrading, ensure that the consent form adequately informs participants of what participation will include.

Community-based research: Choose this option for research projects that are planned to take place at community groups or organizations facilities, and other community-based sites.

Use of new media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.): Choose this option if you are researching social media, if you are only posting recruitment via social media, do not choose this option.  Ensure your application is complete, including addressing the privacy agreement and terms of use for each site, and ensure that research is not restricted/prohibited by the site.

Sensors or monitors applied to subjects: Ensure that the Research Design and Procedures form includes a complete description of the sensors or monitors to be included in the research.

DNA: For studies including DNA samples, ensure that the application and consent documents reflect why and how DNA samples will be collected, and how the samples will be stored and protected.
