L&S Procedure: Suspending, Restructuring, or Discontinuing Majors/Programs
This document provides a link to campus-level policy concerning requests to close or suspend admissions to existing academic programs. For L&S Programs, all requests flow through a governance process that includes review by the L&S Curriculum Committee and approval by the L&S Academic Planning Council.
Overview
This document provides a brief overview of suspension of admissions or declaration to an academic program while it is being revised, restructured, or slated for discontinuation. For programs that are considering suspension of admissions or declaration, there are two options in the Lumen proposal:
- Suspend Admissions: This suspends admissions and gives the program up to 3 years to determine next steps of reopening or discontinuing.
- Suspend, will be discontinued: This sets the path for suspension of admission/declaration followed by discontinuation after all students have completed the degree. On a practical level, the proposal requires specific terms for suspension and discontinuation, and the program provides a detailed teach-out plan.

Program faculty and staff must follow the campus guidelines and policy, which was created to protect students who may be enrolled in programs or planning on enrolling. If suspension of admissions or program closure is being discussed within a unit, it is important to consult with your Associate Dean and the Assistant Dean for Academic Planning. L&S staff will consult with relevant campus partners on timing, considerations, and process.
