HSLC - Wireless Choices
Description of wireless choices at the HSLC
There are two wireless choices detected by your computers and devices here in the HSLC.
- eduroam
- UWNet
We highly recommend using eduroam.
Why? Mainly because it is the only secure encrypted wireless network of the three. Encryption converts your data transmission to code, so that if someone is "listening in" or "sniffing" your data on the network it will look like gibberish to them. eduroam uses your full WiscMail email address (Ex. netid@wisc.edu) with your NetID password for authentication. Take a few minutes for one-time set-up and thereafter you will connect automatically wherever eduroam is available. For instructions on setting up eduroam on your device, click here https://kb.wisc.edu/25020.
More Info:
eduroam (SSID: eduroam)
Secure (encrypted) worldwide roaming wireless access network that UW Madison students, faculty and staff are be able to use their fully scoped username (NetID@wisc.edu) credentials at any eduroam enabled school and get instant network connectivity. In addition, visiting students, faculty, and staff from other campuses can use their campus login credential to access eduroam access points on the UW-Madison campus.
UWNet (SSID: UWNet)
Newer campus wireless network provides higher-speed access and roaming between (UWNet enabled) buildings without having to log in at each location separately, NetID log in required approximately once per semester.
UWNet-Guest
Guests providing an email address to log in will be registered for seven days on the UWNet system.
UWNet Legacy System (SSID: UWNet-Building name)
Older campus wireless network provides high-speed access requires NetID login when moving from building to building.
WiscVPN (Virtual Private Network)
Software that allows eligible users (UW Students, Faculty, and Staff) to access resources that are normally restricted to campus networks and encrypts data while it is in transit, both through regular and wireless networks. Since wireless networks are notoriously insecure, using VPN can give you another layer of security and protection, particularly when you’re sending sensitive information.
