Funding ADA Accommodation for L&S Employees

This document offers departments guidance about providing reasonable accommodations for disability.

From time to time, departments are asked to provide reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities, in order to ensure equal employment opportunities and to provide a workplace environment in which our employees can be successful. Sometimes these requests are communicated informally and accommodated within ordinary departmental processes and decisions (for example, an employee expresses a preference for a particular type of keyboard, to reduce aggravating an old injury). Sometimes these requests are communicated formally, in a process that involves  certification of the need from a treating specialist and employee submission of the Disability Accommodation Request form through the L&S Division Disability Representative (DDR) for his or her employment group (faculty, academic or classified staff, or graduate assistant).  (For the current list of L&S DDRs, please see doc L&S Disability Accommodation - Employment).

In general, it is the College of Letters & Science policy that departments are expected to absorb the cost  for reasonable accommodations up to $1,000 for each case.  If a department has a request that exceeds this amount, the department may contact their respective College DDR to request assistance with the cost of the accommodation.  Each situation will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Please remember that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requests for accommodation must be kept confidential, and the L&S DDR will be the point of contact  (as opposed to the department’s Associate Dean or other staff).

If you have questions on this policy, please contact your HR Manager.
