Microsoft 365 - Why does UW-Madison need to maintain some local infrastructure for email and calendar after the transition?

Keeping some local infrastructure in place after the move to Office 365 allows campus to maintain several advanced, but widely used email and calendar functions that are not available through Office 365 alone. These functions include:
  • IP-based unauthenticated sending (used for copiers, servers, etc)

  • Advanced mail routing used by lists and other services

  • Advanced mail routing to maintain deliverability for all current addresses

  • Mass mailing that exceeds the limits of Office 365

  • Enhanced antivirus and spam filtering capabilities

  • Calendar tools - importing of student class schedules

  • Customized delegated administration functions

Maintaining some local infrastructure allows us to continue to provide these services, which will minimize disruption to campus.
