It is the policy of the University of Wisconsin – Madison that any authenticated, valid netID users (faculty, staff, students, etc.) may choose to identify themselves within the university community with a preferred first and/or middle name that differs from their legal name.
Students: Preferred name can be set by going to MyUW and selecting the "Student Personal Information" widget. If you cannot find this widget, you can search for it at the upper part of the page. Select the "Change" link next to your preferred name. Finally, enter your preferred name.
Employees: Preferred name can be set by going to MyUW and selecting the "Work Record" widget. From there, look for the portlet labeled Personal Information. You may indicate your preferred name by clicking "Change". For further instructions, visit the Personal Information KB document.
If you are a student and an employee you can enter your preferred name in either portlet and it will be used in all participating campus systems. It is not necessary to enter it in both portlets.
