Academic Staff Assembly Document #408
9 March 2009
Resolution on Legislative Proposal Relating to Collective Bargaining
by the University of Wisconsin System Faculty and Academic Staff
Whereas in December 2006, the Academic Staff Assembly at the University of Wisconsin-Madison voted unanimously adopting criteria under which collective bargaining enabling legislation would be acceptable, and
Whereas in April 2007, the UW-Madison Academic Staff Assembly voted to oppose the Governor’s budget proposal relating to faculty and academic staff labor relations because the proposal failed to meet the criteria, and
Whereas legislation enabling collective bargaining for UW System faculty and academic staff continues to be introduced that fails to meet some of the most important of those criteria, and
Therefore be it resolved that the UW-Madison Academic Staff Assembly reaffirms its support for the criteria established in 2006 and supports enabling legislation that meets those criteria, including permitting the academic staff of the UW-Madison to elect whether it wishes to engage in collective bargaining as a set and distinct group or allied with faculty of UW-Madison and/or staff on other UW campuses.
