Guest: Steve Lund
Steve reported briefly on the Critical Compensation Fund (CCF) exercise that will take place this year.  The amount of 1% of payroll for all employees will be used in this exercise.  The Academic Personnel Office studied the recommendations from the CCF report.  He said that many of the recommendations can be met.  Discussion followed regarding the issue of the CCF and category A maxima, including the role of UW System and the Joint Committee on Employment Relations in determining Extraordinary Salary Ranges.

Guest: Steve Stern
Steve reported that the Chancellor has signed off on a high demand fund for faculty and a Critical Compensation Fund (CCF) this year.  There is agreement that the CCF must be balanced between GPR and non-GPR funds.  It is important that there is a window for the CCF adjustments to start.  Steve encouraged ASEC to get involved in following up on the CCF recommendations made by the Assembly.  Denny Hackel and Russell Dimond will follow up on CCF prior to the next ASEC meeting on October 24.

Convene in Closed Session Pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c), and (f) to re-consider name put forth for Provost Search & Screen Committee  (Moved. Seconded. Approved.)

Reconvene in open session. (Moved. Seconded. Approved.)

Guests: Sue Babcock, UW System Presidential Search Committee

Sue told ASEC that she represents UW System faculty at large and also represents the UW-Madison campus.  The search committee will select five or more candidates to recommend to a committee of Regents.  The Regents committee can further narrow the names.  The Board of Regents will make the final decision.  Sue encouraged ASEC to contact her if they have any questions or comments during the process.

General Reports
•    Secretary Heather Daniels reported that the Athletic Board selection will require three ASEC members.  The Excellence Awards will be announced shortly.  Heather D. is discussing the opportunity of advertising the Distinguished Prefix title with the Distinguished Prefix Review Committee.  The Academic Staff Governance table at the Benefits Fair was staffed on October 8 from 9 am – 3 pm.  There were 27 conversations and 4 pounds of candy consumed.  There will be an Appeals Committee Orientation on October 30 from 1:30-3:30 pm.
