UW Digital ID (Personal Certificate) - Configuring Firefox to use a Digital Certificate

UW Digital ID digital certificates can be used with Firefox. If you have not installed your digital certificate, please use the applicable documentation below.

Configuring Firefox

Note: If your toolbar is missing, then press Alt to have the toolbar reappear or you can press Alt+T to get to the Tools.

  1. Open Firefox and select Tools | Options.

  2. Click on the Advanced icon.

  3. In the "Certificates" tab, click on the View Certificates button.

  4. Select the "Your Certificates" tab, then click the Import button.

  5. Browse to your certificate, select it, and click the Open button.

  6. Enter the password for your certificate, and click the OK button.

  7. You should be back in the "Certificate Manager" window, click the OK button.

  8. Click the OK button again to close the Options window.

Important Note : On occasion, Firefox is not able to find your newly downloaded certificate. In most cases, the certificate does exist on your computer and can be exported by following the directions on this KB: 69183


If Firefox cannot use your certificate, you may need to install an additional file before configuring.

  1. Open Firefox and select Tools | Options.

  2. Click on the Advanced icon.

  3. In the "Certificates" tab, click on the Security Devices button.

  4. Click on NSS Internal PKCS#11 Module.

  5. Click Load and browse to the location of the file (the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\System32\eTpkcs11.dll). Select this file and click Open. Accept the default "Module filename." Click the remainder of the OK buttons.

  6. Continue with step 3 above.
