Biological Toxins

If a chemical or product is considered toxic, this does not mean it is a biological toxin. Only toxins that are produced by microorganisms, animals, and plants are considered biological toxins. For a list of biological toxins and corresponding LD50 values, see the University of Florida’s EH&S webpage (http://www.ehs.ufl.edu/programs/bio/toxins/toxin-table/).

Biological Toxins - Select Agent

To learn which biological agents and toxins are considered select agents, visit the following website: http://www.selectagents.gov/SelectAgentsandToxinsList.html.

Some strains or forms of the agents and toxins are excluded from the select agent regulations: http://www.selectagents.gov/SelectAgentsandToxinsExclusions.html.

Select agent biological toxins are exempt from the select agent regulations if the total quantity under the control a PI falls below a certain threshold: http://www.selectagents.gov/PermissableToxinAmounts.html.

Biological Toxins - Select Agent Inventory

Please contact the Office of Biological Safety, regarding inventory and storage regulations of sub-threshold amounts.  Also, please add procedures for reporting of inventory to the Office of Biological Safety (263-2037, biosafety@fpm.wisc.edu).
