DPPS - Course Packet Creation and Distribution

DoIT Digital Publishing & Printing Services (DPPS) provides a centralized service with which UW-Madison faculty and instructors can submit materials for the creation of course packets for their students.

In addition to the physical assembly and distribution of course packets, DPPS will obtain any necessary copyright clearance needed to fairly reproduce the material in your packet.  Note that although DPPS does not charge a fee for this service, owner fees are charged for retrieval and use of the material.  These fees are included the cost of the course packet. Please visit our Copyright Information page for details on fair use and clearance regulations.

How It Works

Course packs should be ordered about two weeks prior to the start of the semester to ensure students receive them before the first class.  When your PDF is ready, upload your file to https://printing.wisc.edu/support/dpps-file-transfer/ and email the following information to printing@doit.wisc.edu using “Course Packet: your course # and name” as the subject line:

  • color or black and white pages
  • single- or double-sided pages
  • bindery style (staple in upper left corner, 3-hole punch, or coil/spiral)
  • is the packet a mandatory or optional purchase for your students?
  • number of enrolled students
  • number of instructor/TA copies needed (one is provided at no cost; additional copies provided at production cost)
  • shipping address, including room number, for instructor/TA copies

After your PDF is uploaded and the specifications are finalized (including necessary copyright clearances), we will provide you with a price and link to the ordering portal which can be shared with your students.  At that time, an initial quantity will be produced and placed into inventory for your students to order.  Students will order online and pay via credit card.  The course packet will ship directly to their residence.

Note that the original production lead time is about 10 days; after that, we will produce on demand as orders are received.

Copyright - Additional Option

To save students some of the costs associated with copyright clearance and printing, you may direct students to the full-text material already available at no charge from online subscriptions at the campus libraries. Students can access articles online, rather than having them included in the actual course packets. For more information, contact College Library at libraries@wisc.edu
