Fall 2015 Materials and Schedule

Follow the links of this page to access readings, discussion sheets, keys to classroom activities. After doing the pre-class reading assignments, you are expected to take a short quiz and to complete "pre-blog" entry. The deadline for completing the readings, the quizzes and the pre-blog is 10:00 am the day of the class, (unless noted otherwise). Feel free to bring your laptop or mobile device to class.

Class Date Modules and Topics
-- W 12/02 Introduce yourself to your instructor (see link below).
1 F   12/04 From Nutrient Requirement to Whole Animal (In)efficiencies
2 M 12/07 Milk Urea Nitrogen (MUN)
3 W 12/09 Urinary Urea N Excretion | Ammonia Emission
4 F   12/11 Urea Recycling
5 M 12/14 C x N Interactions: In the Rumen | Gaseous Emissions

  • -- - W 12/02
    • As a way to practice using the "blog" pages of this site, please introduce yourself to your instructor. May be your classmates will learn something new about you!  If you are enrolled as a course participant, please follow this link for more details (Deadline: 12:00 p.m.).

  • 04 - F 12/11
    • Reading: Reynolds et al. (2008) The microbial/host symbiosis is inherently adaptable to asynchronous N and energy supply | Quiz 07 | Pre-Blog 07.
    • Read Abstract:
      • Spek et al. (2013) Interaction between dietary content of protein and sodium chloride on milk urea concentration, urinary urea excretion, renal recycling of urea, and urea transfer to the gastrointestinal tract in dairy cows.
      • Kohn et al. (2005) Using blood urea nitrogen to predict nitrogen excretion and efficiency of nitrogen utilization in cattle, sheep, goats, horses and rats. The authors reported that kidney's clearance rate of urea was lower in herbivores than in mono gastric animals.
      • Lapierre et al. (2001) Nitrogen recycling in the ruminant: A review.

    • In-class activity: Download and "study" the following two spreadsheets that illustrate important relationships: DMI (kg/d), Dietary CP (%), and NI (kg/d) and Ammonia Ammonium pH and pKa. Also See Class Discussion sheet (Q&A) on Urea Recycling.
