Network - What switchport can I plug my device into?
I need to connect a device to an XXI switchport, how do I know which one I can use? Using one of the solutions below will help you with this.
- Physically go to the IDF/TR and see what ports don't have cables in them yet. Patch the port. DoIT will provide this patch cable for the IDF side only. Please create a case to request patch cords. Be sure to follow UW Authorized cabling standards. Also be sure to update the AANTS->EdgeConf patch field and port description. Record what ports you used and use AANTS to configure these ports for your VLAN.
- What if the port in AANTS is already assigned to a VLAN that is not my VLAN?
- Using WiscNIC, type in the vlan number suffixed with the node area. IE: "320-CSSC" or "320-ANIMAL" or "320-432NM" This will tell you who the admin of that VLAN is and their contact info. Contact the Admin and ask them to move the port your interested in to the default VLAN (VLAN 1).
OR - Create a case or contact the NOC @ 3-4188 and ask to have the port moved to the default VLAN or your VLAN.
- AANTS Admins who are moving the port(s) between VLANs, should notify the VLAN contacts of the change.
- What if all the ports are cabled?
- Using AANTS->Port Use Auditor, select the building with an audit interval of one year. This will show you the number of unused ports per switch.
- If the number of unused ports is greater than the number of ports you need, then click on the unused port column number to find out what ports you can use for your device. After finding the port your going to use, recable the port to it's new location making sure to follow UW Authorized cabling standards and removing the old patch cables. Also be sure to update the AANTS->EdgeConf patch field and port description.
- If the unused ports number is less than the number of ports you need then please create a case, giving the location of where you need more switchports and DoIT will install an additional switch.
- Using AANTS->Get Device Status, select the building of interest and click "Check Status". Here's some rules to find unused ports.
- Ports that are in VLAN 1 and don't have a jack# can be used first.
- If no ports match rule #1, then ports in VLAN 1 with a jack# should be used second. Recable the port, if necessary, to it's new location making sure to follow UW Authorized cabling standards and removing the old patch cables. Also be sure to update the AANTS->EdgeConf patch field and port description.
- If no ports above match rules 1 or 2, then look for ports that have a grey dot. These are ports that are disabled and most likely in a different VLAN.
- If no rules have matched yet:
- Using AANTS->Port Use Auditor, select the building with an audit interval of one year. This will show you the number of unused ports per switch.
- If the number of unused ports is greater than the number of ports you need, then click on that number to find out what ports you can use for your device. Also be sure to update the AANTS->EdgeConf patch field and port description.
- If the unused ports number is less than the number of ports you need then please create a case, giving the location of where you need more switchports and DoIT will install an additional switch.
- If you need further assistance please feel free to contact the Help Desk @ 3-4188 to have a case created. You may also create your own case online by clicking here.
- AANTS Admins who are moving the port(s) between VLANs, should notify the VLAN contacts of the change.
