Kumo Cloud Integration Service

Kumo is a service that provides easy access to your files in UW-Madison Google Drive, UW-Madison Box, and UW-Madison OneDrive for Business when using a Windows system joined to Campus Active Directory that is running the Kumo client software.

Kumo will initially be available in the Campus InfoLabs, however, interested departmental IT staff can contact kumo@doit.wisc.edu with inquiries on deploying the Kumo client in your own environment.

How does Kumo work with UW-Madison cloud storage services?

UW-Madison cloud storage services are connected as virtual drives. You can access your files via mounted drives in Windows Explorer. This drive is silently setup by the Kumo client and is ready to go within seconds of logging in. Files are accessed on demand by the client rather than synced, which minimizes local storage requirements, and all file I/O occurs strictly between the cloud service and the user's machine.

What are the requirements to use Kumo?

Use of the UW-Madison Kumo service is limited to departmental Windows systems joined to Campus Active Directory (AD) whose users login with their NetIDs. These systems must also have the Kumo client software installed. Once these requirements are in place, users simply have to:

  1. Open a browser.
  2. Go to the UW-Madison Kumo portal at https://kumo.wisc.edu/ and click Log In.
  3. Link their cloud storage options (see configuration links below).
  4. Log out and log back into their systems.

These steps only need to be completed once. The drive mappings provided by Kumo will persist and be present on any system the user subsequently logs into that has the Kumo client installed. Departmental customers interested in learning more can contact kumo@doit.wisc.edu.

Are there drawbacks to using Kumo?

There are a handful of limitations users should be aware of when accessing cloud storage services using Kumo:
  • UW-Madison Google Drive users can see their My Drive contents, but not content shared by others that hasn’t been added to My Drive, and can’t see permissions on that content (i.e. whether or not edit rights have been granted)
  • UW-Madison Box users can see shared content, but can’t see permissions on that content (i.e. whether or not edit rights have been granted)
  • UW-Madison OneDrive for Business users can only see their own content
