2factor VPN - Download and Install the Palo Alto GlobalProtect Client
This document outlines the process to install the 2factor VPN client, Palo Alto GlobalProtect.
Introduction
This document is specific to the 2factor VPN service that uses Palo Alto GlobalProtect. 2factor VPN is used to access ERP resources and is not the same as WiscVPN or Departmenal VPN. If you are uncertain if you should use 2factor VPN, please contact the DoIT Help Desk.
BigFix Installation (Windows/MacOS)
If you are an UW Shared Services employee or a DoIT employee in ADI (HRS applications or HRSI), DRMT, or Cybersecurity, you can add this software without administrative privileges over your computer via BigFix. To access your BigFix offers and install GlobalProtect, see the "Viewing Self-Service" section of Departmental Support - Self-Service Pilot.
If you are not employed by one of these departments, you are a Unix user, or you are unable to install the GlobalProtect client via BigFix, see the following sections for manual installation instructions.
Windows Installation
Note: This Windows installation guide references Windows 7. The process is similar on other versions of Windows, and uses the same installation files.
- Navigate to https://www.net.wisc.edu/vpn/clients/ (requires NetID authentication)
- For 64-bit operating systems, click the link for GlobalProtect64-[version].msi to download the 64-bit installer

For 32-bit operating systems, click the link for GlobalProtect-[version].msi to download the 32-bit installer - Once the download completes, open the installation file to begin
- If you are presented with a security warning, click Run
- On the Setup Wizard screen, click Next
- On the Installation Folder screen, choose the installation location and click Next (if you are unsure, leave the default folder)
- On the Confirm Installation screen, click Next to begin the installation
- Wait for the installation to complete
- If prompted with User Account Control window, click Yes to confirm software installation
- Once the installation is completed, click Close
- Continue on to 2factor VPN - Connect to VPN with the Palo Alto GlobalProtect Client to configure and use 2factor VPN
MacOS Installation
- Navigate to https://www.net.wisc.edu/vpn/clients/ (requires NetID authentication)
- Click the link for GlobalProtect-[version].pkg to download the MacOS-compatible installer
- Once the download completes, open the installation file to begin
- Click Continue
- On the Installation Type screen, ensure that only GlobalProtect install is checked, then click Continue
- On the folowing screen, click Install
- If you are prompted for your MacOS username and password, enter them in the prompt, then click Install Software
- Once completed, click Close from the summary screen
- Continue on to 2factor VPN - Connect to VPN with the Palo Alto GlobalProtect Client to configure and use 2factor VPN
Unix Installation
Installation on Unix systems other than MacOS is not officially supported. Use the GlobalProtect-[version].pkg installer located at https://www.net.wisc.edu/vpn/clients/ (requires NetID authentication) for Unix systems.
