Windows XP - Unable to Install Updates from Windows Update
This document explains what to do if you are unable to install updates for Windows XP.

NOTE: Windows 95/98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista are no longer supported by the Help Desk. We can only provide best effort support. If we are unable to resolve your Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista issue, you may be able to find help in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. These products are no longer actively supported by Microsoft. No further development will take place on these products and security updates are no longer issued. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 10 or 8. |
Upon trying to install Windows updates, if you get this error: "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed. Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem." try the following steps:

Clear the cache and cookies of the browser you are using. The following is a link to a document that can show you how to do this:

If that doesn't help, you will need to re-register a couple of .dll files. To do this, follow these easy steps:
- Run the command prompt by clicking on the Start Menu and selecting Run. Type "cmd" and hit Enter.
- In the new window that came up, type each of the following commands, hitting enter after each one:
- REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
- REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
- REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
- REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
- REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
- REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
- REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
- REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
After clearing the cache and cookies, try running Windows Update again.
