This document describes how to perform a full virus scan with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) on Windows XP, Vista and 7 computer systems.

Before scanning, make sure the SEP software and virus definitions are up to date. Refer to Symantec Endpoint Protection (Win) - Running Live Update for details. It is recommended that you run the scan in Safe Mode.

Running a Full Scan in Normal Mode

  1. Double-click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon in the Windows system tray. (Note: If you are running in safe mode, the icon in the system tray will not be present. In this case, open using the program icon from the start menu.)

  2. Click on the Scan for Threats button in the left navigation of the Symantec Endpoint Protection window.

  3. Click on Run Full Scan to initiate the scan. A window displaying "Files Scanned" and "Elapsed Time" will open.

The procedure may vary slightly for different versions.

Running a Full Scan in Safe Mode

  1. Restart the computer.

  2. As it's starting up, tab the F8 key every half-second or so.

  3. You should see a black screen with white text asking you what you want to boot into. Select Safe Mode (not Safe Mode with Networking). If your computer proceeds to boot into Windows normally, you didn't press F8 early enough. Start over from step 1.

  4. You should see scrolling white text. This is normal. Wait until the desktop loads.

  5. Once the desktop has loaded, go to the Start Menu, All Programs, the Symantec Endpoint Protection folder, then click on Symantec Endpoint Protection.

  6. You may receive an error saying "It appears that the Symantec Management Client Service is not running. You will not be able to manage network protection settings through the main user interface until it is running. Do you want to start the service now?" If you receive the error, click No.

  7. Symantec Endpoint Protection should open. Click on Scan for threats on the left hand side, then select Full Scan. A window displaying "Files Scanned" and "Elapsed Time" will open.
