Guide to Installing SPSS 21–25 and 29–31 on Windows and Mac
This document provides instructions for installing SPSS versions 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, and 31 on Mac and Windows machines.
Requirements for all operating systems in order to begin the installation process:
- A user account with full administrator privileges
- A computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems
- A copy of the SPSS installation file (downloaded from the Campus Software Library)
- At least 2GB of hard drive space free for the installation
How to Install SPSS 21, 22, or 23 (Windows)
- Open the Windows File Explorer.
- Locate the SPSS zip file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library (it should like look something like the image below):
- Right-click on the file, and select Extract All...
- A window will then pop up and ask you to choose an extraction location—choose the same location in which the zip file was stored.
- Once the extraction is complete, you will see that another file with the same name as the zip file has been created—this is a folder and not a zip file. Open this folder, and scroll down through the listed files until you see a file named setup.exe.
- Double-click on this file to open the InstallShield Wizard.
- On the first screen that pops up, click the Next button.
- On the next screen, choose the Authorized user license option, and then click Next.
- On the following screen, accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
- Fill out both the Username and Organization fields with your NetID and "The University of Wisconsin Madison," respectively, and then click Next.
- Choose any additional language packs you would like to use (if any), and then click Next.
- Choose the No option under the Do you need JAWS for Windows screen reading software enabled for IBM SPSS Statistics?, unless you require accessibility assistance using that type of screen reader. If you do not know what this is, then choose No.
- Choose the Yes or No option under Install IBM SPSS Statistics - Essentials for Python (depending on whether you will be using SPSS along with Python on your computer), and then click Next.
- Accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
- Accept the terms in the second license agreement, then click Next.
- Leave the default installation location as is, and click Next.
- Finally, click the Install button to install the program.
- Once the installation is complete, click OK to proceed to the license authorization process.
- Choose the first option that says License my product now, then click Next.
- Enter the authorization code in the Enter Code field that was provided to you when you initiated the download in the Campus Software Library.
- Click the Next button. You have now installed and properly licensed SPSS on your Windows machine.
How to Install SPSS 24 (Windows)
- Open the Windows File Explorer.
- Locate and double-click on the SPSS_Statistics_24_win64[32].exe file to open it.
- A User Account Control window will then pop up. Click Yes.
- The installation process has now begun. Click Next to continue.
- Accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
- Choose the Yes or No option under Install IBM SPSS Statistics - Essentials for Python (depending on whether you will be using SPSS along with Python on your computer), then click Next.
- Accept the terms in the license agreement, then click Next.
- Accept the terms in the second license agreement, and click Next.
- Leave the destination install folder as is, then click Next.
- Finally, click the Install button to begin the actual installation of the program.
- Once the installation has completed, make sure that the check box to open the program afterward is checked, and then click Finish. The program has now successfully installed on your computer; the next stage is to license it.
- Two windows should then appear after you have clicked Finish, one of which looks like the image below:
- Click on the License Product button in the middle in the right-hand side of the window.
- The License Status window should then appear. Click Next to continue.
- Choose the Authorized User License option, and then click Next.
- In the Enter Code text box, enter the authorization code given to you when you initiated the download in the Campus Software Library.
- You have now successfully installed and properly licensed your copy of SPSS on your Windows machine.
How to Install SPSS 29, 30, or 31 (Windows)
- Locate and double-click on the SPSS zip file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library.
- If a window pops up asking if you would like to "allow this app to make changes to your device," allow access—the installation will not initiate unless access is granted.
- An initialization screen may appear while preparing for the installation—do nothing. When the InstallShield Wizard appears, click Next.
- On the License Agreement window, there will be two answer options below the license information box; select I agree to the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next.
- You will then be asked to confirm the default destination folder for the installation file or choose a different one. It is recommended to use the default folder. Click Next.
- The software should now be ready for installation. Click Install.
- Once the InstallShield Wizard confirms the installation was successfully completed, click Finish.
How to Install SPSS 21, 22, 23, or 24 (Mac)
- Locate and double-click on the SPSS_Statistics_25_mac.dmg file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library.
- Double-click on the installer icon that pops up in the new window, as shown below.
- A warning message may appear that says, "This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" Click Open, and then enter your Mac's username and password when prompted.
- Choose your language in the installer window that appears, and then click Next.
- When the introduction window appears, click Next again.
- Skip to step #9 of the How to Install SPSS 21, 22, or 23 (Windows) drop-down panel at the top of this page. The installation instructions should be the same, although the order in which the specific windows appear may vary.
How to Install SPSS 29, 30, or 31 (macOS)
- Locate and double-click on the SPSS zip file that you downloaded from the Campus Software Library (default location should be Downloads).
- When the installer window opens, click Continue.
- After reading over the Important Information section, click Continue.
- The Software License Agreement will then appear. After reading through the agreement, click Continue.
- You will then be prompted to agree or decline to agree to the terms of software license agreement. You must click Agree in order to continue the installation process.
- Depending on the software version, you may be asked to select a destination for the installation; if so, it is recommended to leave the default location selected. Click Continue.
- If you are prompted to authorize the installation, use Touch ID or enter your Mac administrative password by selecting Use Password.
- SPSS 29 may require you to enter both your macOS username and password before proceeding; if you see this window with the choice to either Install Software or Cancel, select Install Software. You will then skip step 8.
- On the following page, click Install.
- Once the finder window confirms SPSS was successfully installed, click Close to exit.
