WiscWeb - WordPress UW Theme - Flushing Permalinks

Flushing WordPress permalinks is a process that updates a website's URL structure. Typically, permalinks must be flushed whenever adding a custom post type or taxonomy. An example of this would be when adding a faculty/staff post type or creating events. This document will walk you through the process of flushing the permalinks on your site.

Diagnosing the issue

The UW Theme is comprised of several 'custom post types,' such as Publications or Events. When these posts are created, they may cause issues with the link structure of the site and this can be resolved by performing the steps listed below. You will notice this issue if you attempt to access a post that you just created (for example, an event or a recurring event), and receive a Page Not Found instead of the post you were expecting.

Updating the Permalinks structure

To update your Permalinks structure, follow these steps:

  1. From your WordPress Dashboard, hover your mouse over the Settings menu on the left and click on Permalinks.

  2. With the Permalinks Settings section, there are no specific actions that need to be taken. Simply scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Save Changes.

  3. Do a hard refresh (hold down your Shift key and click refresh) of the post that was not working to see if it will now populate with your content.
