Determining Windows Version

Windows 10

  1. Go to the Start Menu
  2. Search for "System"
  3. Any of the following results will allow you to determine your system's architecture
    System
  4. The System Control panel will indicate the system architecture type

Palo Alto GlobalProtect

Palo Alto GlobalProtect is the campus VPN client for use with WiscVPN. Below are instructions for installing Global Protect.

Downloading Global Protect

6. You should see "Palo Alto GlobalProtect" as an available application to install (if it is not already installed on your system)
7. Click on the application tile and you will be presented with the option to install. Click "Install" to automatically download and install the program.
Install from Software Center 

Personal Devices & Non-Housing Clients

  1. Navigate to https://uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu/
  2. Log in with your NetID and Password
  3. Click on the link to download the version that correlates with your operating system.

  4. If you are not sure which version of Windows you are running, refer to Determining Windows Version
  5. If you have a Mac, select Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent.

Installing the GlobalProtect Client (Windows)

  1. Open the downloaded file, and choose "Run" when prompted.

  2. Click "Next" to proceed through the installation.
  3. When asked whether or not you want to allow the program to install software on your computer, choose "Yes".
  4. After following these instructions, GlobalProtect will be installed and ready for use.

Installing the GlobalProtect Client (Mac)

  1. Open the downloaded file. Proceed through the installation process, you will need to click "continue", then "continue", then "install".

  2. If you are prompted for your password, type it in. It will look like the image below once you have typed in your password. Then select "install software".

Launching Palo Alto GlobalProtect

Windows Instructions MacOS Instructions
  1.  Press the Windows key to open the Start Menu
  2. Search for the program by typing GlobalProtect in the search field. 
  3. Click on the program to launch it.
    PanGP Program
  1. Select the search icon in the top right corner of the screen, or press the Command and Space keys at the same time, to launch  Spotlight Search
  2. Type "GlobalProtect" to search for the application
  3. Click the program in the search results to launch

  4. You can also launch the program from your Mac's applications folder which can be accessed from the "Go" menu in Finder, and then selecting "Applications" (or using the "Command-Shift-A" keyboard shortcut")

Configuring and Connecting with Palo Alto GlobalProtect

Type the following information below into the relevant fields:
  • Portal: uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu
  • Username: NetID
  • Password: NetID Password
    Configuration
  • Finally, click "Connect" to connect to the campus network over WiscVPN via the GlobalProtect client

Disconnecting from GlobalProtect

  1.  Click on the "show hidden icons arrow" in the lower right corner of the Task Bar if the GlobalProtect icon is not already displaying in the System Tray. 
  2. Right click the GlobalProtect icon
    Disconnect - Windows
  3. Click "Disconnect"
  4. You are now disconnected from WiscVPN
  1. Click on the GlobalProtect icon in the menu bar. (It will look like a picture of the earth.)
  2. Click "Disconnect"
  3. You are now disconnected from WiscVPN
