Disabling the SSDP Service on Lanier and Ricoh Multi-Function Devices

This document explains how to disable the SSDP service on Lanier and Ricoh multi-function devices. Bugs in the SSDP service of multi-function printers have caused network problems on campus.

Note: Not all Lanier and Ricoh printers are SSDP capable, typically only the Multi-Function Devices.

Disabling the SSDP Service Through the Web Interface

  1. Open a web browser and go to the URL of the printer's IP address or hostname.
  2. Click the Login button.

  3. Enter the admin account credentials at the prompt.

    • The default password varies by model number, but is usually either "password" or left blank.
    • Be sure to set a password for the printer if you have not already done so.
  4. Navigate to the Configuration -> Network -> SSDP menu.

  5. Change the SSDP radio button to Disable and then click the Apply button.
  6. Click the OK button at the configuration update page (it does not auto-refresh).

  7. Verify that SSDP is disabled and then logout of the web interface.

Disabling the SSDP Service Through the Command Line Interface (CLI)

  1. Telnet to the printer's IP address or hostname.
  2. Login with the admin account credentials.
    • The default password varies by model number, but is usually either "password" or left blank.
    • Be sure to set a password for the printer if you have not already done so.
  3. At the msh> prompt enter the command "set ssdp down".
  4. Enter the command "logout" to exit the CLI.
  5. Enter yes at the prompt to save the configuration data.
