MFA-Duo - Setting a Default Login Device

This document will show how to change the default login device settings for MFA-Duo.

Setting the default login device and method:

  1. Navigate to the Duo Device Management Portal at www.mfa.wisc.edu. Authenticate with your UW-Madison NetID and Password.

  2. Click Manage MFA Preferences and Devices and authenticate with MFA Duo.
  3. You will see the My Settings & Devices page.

  4. Set Default Device to be the device you would like to be contacted on when logging in.

    Note: a Token cannot be set as default if there is an additional device in the list.

  5. Set When I log in to be the method you would like to be contacted on that device. If the device is a smartphone or tablet with the Duo app installed, UW-Madison strongly recommends you do NOT select 'Automatically send this device a Duo Push'.

    Note: If you select to automatically send a push to this device, you will not have the opportunity to select "remember me for 12 hours" during the initial login push. If you would like to retain the option to remember the device for 12 hours, do not select this option.

  6. When you next log in to a MFA Duo protected service, you will automatically be contacted via the default settings.

    Note: Logging into the Duo portal will always ask how you would like to authenticate (i.e. Passcode or Duo Push), so the default setting will not apply when logging into the Duo Device Management Portal.

How to get access to a Security Key or Duo Token/Fob 

Students

Students, to obtain a token/fob, please contact the DoIT Help Desk (608) 264-4357 or email help@doit.wisc.edu. Students with disabilities can also request a token or security key at the McBurney Disability Resource Center, 702 W. Johnson St., Suite #2104, Madison WI 53715 on the 2nd floor.

Faculty, Staff, and Researchers
