The Open Seat / ASM

The Open Seat logo

The Open Seat strives to alleviate the stresses of food insecurity by providing friendly
and accessible sources of food for the students of The University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Open Seat supplies any UW-Madison student in need with free boxes of food packed and distributed by Second Harvest Foodbank during the COVID-19 pandemic. These food boxes come in 10-15 lb sizes. Options vary weekly but various quantities of produce, dairy, and dry goods are typically available.

The Open Seat will be closed December 23, 2021 to January 20, 2022. If someone needs to access food at the SAC location during break they should email joanna.gurstelle@wisc.edu to schedule an appointment.

Our pantry will reopen with our spring semester hours starting Friday, January 21, 2022 (12-4:00pm)!

Spring 2022 semester hours:

Monday: 3:00-6:00pm, East Campus Mall

Wednesday: 4:30-5:30pm, Eagle Heights Distribution (East Campus Mall pantry closed)

Friday: 12:00pm-4:00pm, East Campus Mall

We will still offer produce boxes (only East Campus Mall) and produce, cooler, and dry boxes (for the Eagle Heights location) in the spring!

The products in our pantry will vary week-to-week depending on donations, but it will typically consist of:

  • Non-perishable items like soup, baking materials, pasta, canned vegetables, canned fruit, beans, snacks, bread, etc.

What does a produce, cooler, or cooler box usually consist of?

Produce Boxes: (provided by the Second Harvest boxes) including a type of leafy green (spinach, lettuce, etc.), tomatoes, peppers, carrots, and beets

Dairy products:  Eggs, meat, yogurt, sliced cheese, bread, and cottage cheese

Dry Boxes: Canned goods, dried fruits, cereal, pasta

Lastly, we provide an array of hygiene products. You can choose from:

  • Body Products (lotion, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, shaving cream, soap)
  • Oral Hygiene (Toothpaste, floss, toothbrush, Chapstick)
  • Menstrual Products (pads, tampons, diva cups, panty liners)

Everything is free of purchase, but we ask that you only take what you need!
