WiscWeb - WordPress UW Theme - Exporting a Site Using All-in-One Migration Plugin

This page will walk you through the steps of downloading, installing, and exporting the WiscWeb version of All in one WordPress Migration.

Introduction

WiscWeb uses a plugin called "All in one WordPress Migration" to help facilitate migrations from WordPress sites into WiscWeb. "All in One Migration" by default exports all themes, plugins, and other files that are needed to run a WordPress site. This is great for migrating a site from one host to another, however WiscWeb already has the infrastructure, plugins, and themes already setup and does not allow these files to be imported into the system. You will need to check that you have selected the correct settings as specified in this document for "All in One WordPress Migration" to ensure that your sites is export file will be accepted by WiscWeb and not cause any issues for your new site. 

Downloading the Plugin

To download the plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-migration/ and click on the download button.

This will begin the download of the most recent version of the plugin in a format that is ready for WordPress.

Installing the Plugin

Your site may already have the migration plugin installed. To verify this, log into your website. In the menu on the left side of the screen you should see an item labeled "All-In-One WP Migration".

If you do not see this option you will need to install the migration plugin. To do so, from your sites admin menu navigate to "Plugins".

On the plugins page, click the button at the top labeled "Add New"

Depending on your site's configuration this button may not be on the page. Some sites limit the ability to add new plugins. If this is the case, contact your IT department or web team to install the plugin for you.

After clicking the "Add New" button, you will be brought to the plugin page. Up at the top you should see a button that says "Upload Plugin", click that and a section will appear on the page with a button that says "Choose File", click that and select the .zip file that you downloaded.

After the zip file uploads, click "Install Now." This will start the plugin installation.

After the plugin is installed you will see a status page with a blue button that says "Activate Plugin" click that to activate the migration plugin.

Once the plugin is installed you will be redirected to the main plugins page. 


Using the Migration Plugin

You will now see a new tab on the left hand admin menu called "All-in-One WP Migration", if you hover over it you will get a few options. Click on "Export"

On the export page, click on "Advanced Options" and you will see a list of check boxes. Ensure that the following boxes are checked:

  • Do not export spam comments
  • Do not export post revisions
  • Do not export themes (files)
  • Do not export must-use plugins (files)
  • Do not export plugins (files)
  • Do not replace email domain (sql)

On the export page click on "Export To" to open the export menu and select "File"

The export process will begin, a modal window will appear on your page and display information about the migration process. Do not close your browser, if you do the export will not finish. When the export finishes you will see a button that says "Download [YOUR SITE NAME]", click the button and it will download your export file to your browsers download directory.

Submitting Your Site Export to the WiscWeb Team

When your site's export file has been downloaded, you will make it available to the WiscWeb team by uploading it into Box. When uploaded to Box, please send us an email with a link to the file and the name of the project. This email can be sent to: cms-support@doit.wisc.edu. The upload process will likely take a while (up to 30 minutes) depending on the size of the site.
