Issue

The Gateway Timeout error (also known as a 504 server error) is an indication that something is wrong with the server. The message shows up when it takes the server so long to load a page that it is actually timing out.

This may be an indicator that WiscWeb is experiencing an outage or instability.

Resolution

The first thing you should try is refreshing/reloading the page. In some cases, this will allow you to keep editing your project and/or viewing your web pages.

If refreshing does not work, please email help@doit.wisc.edu right away. Include the following:

  • Your NetID
  • The project/website you edit
  • A brief description of what you were doing when you encountered the error (filling out a form, updating a page, etc.)

Tips

  • Sometimes, a Gateway Timeout is only a momentary blip. Refreshing your browser a couple times can fix the issue in some cases.
