WiscWeb - "Service Unavailable" error

This document will discuss what the "Service Unavailable" is, what it looks like, and what you should do when you see it.

The message displayed with this error states: "The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

Issue

The Service Unavailable error occurs when the server is unable to communicate with a PHP script. In many cases, this is just a momentary server blip and it will resolve itself within a few minutes.

Other possible causes include:

  • an unsuccessful plugin update
  • a custom piece of script that is not behaving as expected

Resolution

As this error may only be a momentary blip, we first recommend that you refresh your browser screen a few times to see if the error rights itself. If that doesn't seem to work and the error persists, please reach out to the WiscWeb Support team right away so that we can identify the issue and remedy it in a timely fashion. Email help@doit.wisc.edu and please include your name, your project name, what you were doing when you experienced the outage, and any other information that may prove helpful.

Tips

  • If you see this error after having pasted some script code into the text block of a page and publishing, the code you used may be buggy. Please enter the editing environment of the page, remove the script, and republish.
