Pressbooks - Known Issue - Kaltura Media Playback Issues (UW-Madison)

Pressbooks is an innovative, open-source tool and is still emerging as an enterprise-level platform with predictable performance. Please take this into account when deciding to use Pressbooks for the creation of course and assignment materials. Learn@UW-Madison continues to track and document known issues with Pressbooks.

This document describes Kaltura MediaSpace playback errors in Pressbooks and steps Learn@UW is taking to correct it.

In Spring 2019, some Google Chrome users reported not being able to watch certain Kaltura MediaSpace content embedded in Pressbooks.

Affects

This affects Google Chrome users that are trying to view YouTube videos added to Kaltura MediaSpace that have been embedded in Pressbooks.

Status

As of 3/7/2019, this issue is still present. UW-Madison technologists determined that YouTube videos added to Kaltura MediaSpace may not play as expected when embedded into Pressbooks.

Workaround

For students viewing content in Google Chrome, right click the video, and select Reload Frame. Once the video reloads, click play. The video should play without issue after reloading. You can also try viewing the content in another internet browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, and the video should play without issue.

For instructors, we recommend downloading the video from YouTube and uploading the video to Kaltura MediaSpace whenever allowed by copyright. If you are not able to download the video, we recommend adding a direct link into your pressbook instead of embedding the video.
