DoIT Departmental Support - 2019 Java SE License Changes and Client Remediation
In April 2019, Oracle made licensing changes that affects non-personal use of new releases of Java 8 standard edition. Users supported by Departmental Support using standalone Java 8 components may be affected.
Oracle License Change Summary
Changes to the Java Standard Edition platform (Java SE) license, effective April 16, 2019, require non-personal users of Java SE (see Oracle FAQ for details on 'personal use') to pay a subscription fee to continue receiving updates to Java 8 clients, which includes the Java JRE and components such as Java Web Start. This change affects standalone installations of the Java 8 client that are used by some apps, including some web-based tools. Applications that use a packaged version of Java installed with the app or installations that are used or included as part of other licensed Oracle services (such as Oracle Forms and Reports systems - see services listed in Java - Compatible Versions for UW Services) are not affected and do not require separate licensing.
Changes to Departmental Support Computers
In order to ensure departmental machines continue to operate with the most secure, up-to-date software, as well as to comply with Oracle's new licensing, Departmental Support has planned a number of changes for Oracle Java SE 8 installations on managed endpoints. Beginning in May, Departmental Support stopped providing Java SE 8 on newly provisioned computers by default, and conducted an analysis of Java 8 usage on existing machines. On Tuesday, June 18, 2019, DS plans to uninstall Java 8 clients that have not been used for longer than 2 months along with June monthly updates on departmental machines in an effort to reduce the install base of Java 8. Remaining systems that still have Oracle Java 8 client installations will have their installations updated to the latest version.
We will be crafting a survey to send out to users that continue to require Java to confirm their use case conforms to Oracle's new licensing model, and if it does not we will help users explore alternative options, such as OpenJDK.
What if I still need Oracle Java SE?
Should there be a need for Java on a departmentally supported system that does not explicitly require Oracle Java SE, Departmental Support will be offering OpenJDK as an alternative Java platform. If a machine marks its Java 8 SE installation as inactive and is remediated, DS supported users will be able to reinstall OpenJDK Java via BigFix Offers (Departmental Support - Software Offers) to replace their old Java 8 installation.
