Upgrading to Windows 10 (Officially Supported) Reinstalling Windows 7 (Not Officially Supported)
General Information This is our only official service when it comes to Windows 7 support.

We will no longer officially be performing Windows 7 reinstallations. The process is over a week long (on a technician's desk) due to updates, and since support is being dropped in early 2020, we will begin phasing out our software repair support of Windows 7.

Students Students will need to get their activation key from the Campus Software Library. This is no longer an officially-supported service.

If the customer is insistent on having Windows 7 reinstalled on their machine, please see the information below.
Faculty, Staff, Emeritus, Retired (Personal Devices) Faculty/Staff/Emeritus/Retired customers will need to purchase a Windows 10 license directly from Microsoft.

There is no charge for labor if format approval is given. If the customer would like their data backed up there is a cost for labor ($80)

Faculty, Staff, Emeritus, Retired (Departmental Devices)

The customer's local IT group will provide guidance on how their department will address this issue.

DoIT Departmental Support will directly contact their customers to arrange for an upgrade to Windows 10, if needed.

Microsoft's official policy is to purchase a new laptop with Windows 10 on it, rather than upgrade from Windows 7. To purchase a new departmental computer running Windows 10, visit shopuw.wisc.edu, and visit the Dell punchout store, where you will find a variety of computer models to meet your computing needs.

Additional Information Regarding Windows 7 Reinstallations

If the customer is insistent on having Windows 7 reinstalled on their machine, inform them of the following:

  2. Once the computer is on a repair technician's desk, it will take around 7 days to complete.
  3. Students: It will cost $80 for labor.
  4. Fac/Staff/Emeritus/Retired: If situation is not resolved by the customer's local IT group, it is $160 for labor.
