LastPass - How to activate a UW-Madison Enterprise LastPass account

1Password is replacing LastPass as UW-Madison's supported Password Manager. 1Password was selected for its intuitive user-friendly interface, robust set of features, and excellent track record in safeguarding sensitive data.
Current LastPass users are being invited to 1Password starting in December 2024. LastPass will remain active until May 2025. For more information and updates, refer to the transition FAQ: 1Password - LastPass Transition FAQs

This document details how to create an enterprise LastPass account for UW-Madison related activities.
To create a UW-Madison Entperise LastPass account please follow these steps:
  1. Open a fresh browser or open a new incognito window on the browser you are already using.
  2. Go to your Wisc Account Administration page and log in with your NetID, password, and Duo if you not already logged in. When you are logged in you will see this screen.

  3. Click on LastPass then on Status, if not already on the LastPass Status page.
  4. In the Status window, click on Enable.

    Enable LastPass
  5. This action will generate an email invitation to your wisc.edu email address which you can use to log in to LastPass. The email will look like this:

    Welcome Email
  6. Copy the Activation code to your clipboard or a text editor application.
  7. Click Activate LastPass.
  8. Once redirected to the "Finish account creation" page, paste the Activation code into the field (your LastPass username is already pre-populated for you).
  9. Click Continue.
  10. You are redirected to the NetID login page, where you can finish signing in to LastPass using your NetID account credentials.

Results: Your LastPass account is now activated to use NetID login, and you will continue to use your NetID account credentials to access your LastPass vault.

Next steps:

  1. To get the most out of LastPass, install the browser extension and use it as the primary mechanism for accessing LastPass and for storing passwords.
  2. We strongly recommend setting a recovery phone number and an emergency email account.
