Troubleshooting - Installing Symantec on Mac OS Catalina

Campus licenses for Symantec Endpoint Protection expire on June 24, 2020 for Students and July 31, 2020 for Faculty and Staff. You can learn more about the license expiration and recommended antivirus solutions at Campus Symantec License Expiration - Summer 2020.

This document details installing/troubleshooting the installation of Symantec Endpoint Protection from the UW-Madison Campus Software Library for Mac OS Catalina (10.15)

NOTE: These instructions are for users experiencing issues installing Symantec on a MAC computer running OS version 10.15.x (Catalina). Any other user should refer to:

Step one: Completely uninstall any current installation of Symantec

  • It is recommended to use the uninstallation tool found in the Broadcom support knowledge base to ensure all relevant files are removed from the device. Instructions for using the tool are detailed on the download page.

  • Once the files have been removed, restart the machine.

Step two: Download the Symantec installer for Catalina from the UW-Madison Campus Software Library

  1. Sign in to the Campus Software Library

  2. Click on Symantec under the "Security" heading

  3. At the bottom of page, click on the download for Symantec for Mac OS X Catalina 10.15.x

Step three: Installing Symantec

  1. Run the Symantec installer downloaded from the Campus Software Library

  2. If the installation fails, run the terminal command "xattr -rc 'path/to/symantec-installer'" replacing the path with the location where the Symantec installer is saved

  3. Now run the installer again.
